March 26, 2007 Diocese of Ottawa elects new bishop

Canon John Chapman, dean of theology at Huron University College in London, Ont., is the new bishop of the Anglican diocese of Ottawa. Mr. Chapman, 53, was elected co-adjutor (successor) bishop on the fourth ballot at an episcopal election held March 24 at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa.

March 13, 2007 Blessings vote to be decided by resolution

Mississauga, Ont. Sexuality issues, including whether dioceses may decide for themselves whether to allow the blessing of same-sex unions, will be decided by General Synod through resolutions requiring the approval of a 60 per cent majority of the members of the order of bishops, laity and clergy or 60 per cent of dioceses if a vote by diocese is requested, the Council of General Synod (CoGS) has decided.

March 11, 2007 Priest to lose licence over same-sex marriage stance

Rev. Shawn Sanford Beck, an Anglican priest in the diocese of Saskatoon, will lose his licence to minister after March 31 if he does not reconsider his declaration that he intends to marry gay couples, if asked, said diocesan bishop Rodney Andrews.

March 9, 2007 Residential schools agreement approved

All nine provincial and territorial courts approved on March 8 the revised Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA), a move that could mean that the agreement may be implemented by fall.

March 2, 2007 Igloo church among worst heritage losses in 2006

St. Jude’s Cathedral in Iqaluit, which was damaged by arson in November 2005 and demolished in June 2006, has been included in Heritage Canada Foundation’s list of Worst Losses of 2006.

February 23, 2007 Archbishop Hutchison ‘discouraged’ by primates’ communiqué

Archbishop Andrew Hutchison, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, said that he had been “profoundly discouraged” by the communiqué issued by Anglican leaders warning the U.S. church of consequences if it did not abandon its liberal stance on sexuality, and had found it “tempting” not to sign it.

February 22, 2007 Canadian Anglicans weigh in on primates' warning to U.S. church

The Canadian church was hardly mentioned in the communiqué that ended the Feb 15-19 meeting of Anglican primates in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, but the church’s General Synod, will wrestle with questions of sexuality in June and that fact was much on the minds of Canadian observers.
