A collection of 150 icons from the Eastern Orthodox world is the subject of The Sacred Image of the Icon: A World of Belief at the Varley Art Gallery in Markham, Ont., near Toronto. Painted on wooden panels, carved in ivory or cast in metal, the icons, which represent Christ, Mary and saints of the early church are “sublimely beautiful and meditative – divine in the truest sense,” said curator Katerina Atanassova. The exhibit runs from May 8 to Sept. 1.
