Church historian new director of TST

Rev. Alan Hayes, who is a professor of church history at Wycliffe College, has been named the new director of the Toronto School of Theology (TST), the TST board has announced. Mr. Hayes, who has authored many books and articles on Anglicanism and is a columnist for the Niagara Anglican, the newspaper of the diocese of Niagara, was scheduled to assume his post March 1.

Mr. Hayes has also taught at the Vancouver School of Theology, McGill University, and Queen’s Theological College.

Ordained a priest in 1989, Mr. Hayes has been honorary assistant priest at St. Simon’s church in Oakville, Ont., since January 2005. He was instituted canon of Christ’s Church Cathedral, diocese of Niagara, in December 2005.

Mr. Hayes received a bachelor of divinity and doctor of philosophy degrees from McGill University; he also holds a bachelor of arts degree from Pomona College, Claremont, Calif.

Among the books that he authored are An Ecclesiastical Proletariat: Canadian Anglican Women Trained as Church Workers, 1893-1969, Anglicans in Canada: Controversy and Identity in Historical Perspective and Holding Forth the Word of Life: Little Trinity Church 1842-1992.
