The diocese of New Westminster’s diocesan council in late January approved a motion urging the Anglican Church of Canada’s national office in Toronto to continue 10-times-per year publication of the Anglican Journal. The council’s motion sought to ensure that Anglicans across the country receive timely news from their own church’s publications and not solely from the secular media. In most dioceses, the Journal is printed and mailed together with the diocesan newspaper. The Journal receives a subsidy from the federal government that reduces its postage cost to about 17 cents per paper. Council member Charles Nurse told his colleagues that if the Journal were to stop publication, the subsidy would be lost, and it would be prohibitively expensive to mail a diocesan newspaper to every Anglican household in the country. A reduction in the Journal’s publication frequency was considered last fall as one way to meet a projected national church deficit.
