American Kathy Sullivan Vandenberg weeps as she kneels for the laying of hands at an ordination ceremony for her and eight other women to the Catholic diaconate and the priesthood. The ceremony, which was not sanctioned by the Vatican and which was the first involving Roman Catholics in North America, took place July 25 on a boat on the St. Lawrence River near Gananoque in eastern Canada.
