Newly-elected Bishop Colin Johnson, suffragan in Toronto

Toronto Archdeacon Colin Johnson was elected suffragan (area) bishop in the Anglican diocese of Toronto on the third ballot at St. James' Cathedral on April 26.

Archdeacon Johnson, 50, will be consecrated at the cathedral on June 21. He will be appointed by Archbishop Terence Finlay, diocesan bishop of Toronto, to lead one of the diocese's five episcopal areas in the near future. For the past 11 years, Mr. Johnson has served as executive assistant to Archbishop Finlay.

Archdeacon Johnson is a resident of Ajax, Ont. and his home parish is St. Martin's, Bay Ridges in Pickering, Ont. He has also been a member of three General Synods. At General Synod 2001, he served as chair of the nominating committee.

The diocese of Toronto is the largest Anglican diocese in Canada with more than 200 parishes. Also nominated for election were Canon Paul Feheley of Oshawa, Rev. Peter Fenty of Bramalea, Canon Linda Nicholls of Thornhill, Canon Philip Poole of Aurora, Rev. Harold Roberts of Mississippi, Canon Greg Symmes of Bolton and Rev. Michael Wright of Peterborough.
