Published June 1, 2006

The Anglican Journal won a total of 22 awards at two separate international and national church press conventions held last spring. The Journal won five first place awards at the Canadian Church Press (CCP) convention and awards dinner held last May in Winnipeg, and two awards of excellence (first place) at the Associated Church Press (ACP) held last April in Orlando, Fla. Journal editor Leanne Larmondin won an ACP award of excellence for best editorial in a newspaper or news service, for her November 2005 editorial that criticized the national church’s bureaucracy for keeping secret a report about the Anglican Book Centre. The newspaper’s culture section – a monthly blend of music, book and film reviews – won the top award for best newspaper department. At the CCP awards, staff writer Marites Sison won two first place awards; in the news story category (Primates call for breathing space, April Journal; with files from fellow staff writer Solange De Santis) and for service journalism, for the December feature  Dreaming of a simple Christmas. Art director Saskia Rowley also won two first place awards for layout and design of an edition (June 2005) and feature layout and design (for a November 2005 Remembrance Day article).
